Blog-o-fail

Ok, so there was no post yesterday. I blame being unexpectedly dragged into the lab, resulting in being out from 8.40 till half past midnight. Although the later bit may have been due to watching “classic” 80s music videos in the MCR. Hooray for Sky! I did make it home for about half an hour actually, but getting food somehow took priority.

Anyway, I finally took a look at the Wikimedia Foundation’s first Annual Report. It’s impressively professional, it really shows how far the Foundation has come. And I say this having been to a careers fair today, where I was bombarded with many nicely put together booklets. I think the WMF one is my favourite, and not just because it’s something I’m rather close to. The report is well worth a look if you want to find out more about Wikimedia – the “anatomy of a wikipedia article” in the middle is particularly wonderful.

El Presidente

Apparently there’s some sort of election going on. I did think there’s nothing I can write that hasn’t been written already, but apparently I can. I’m strongly favouring Obama, and I don’t think I know (in real life) a single person who would vote for McCain given the chance. But whoever wins, the world will still carry on tomorrow. If McCain wins, the Earth probably won’t implode (although if he snuffs it and Palin comes to power, that might be a different matter). And if Obama wins, life isn’t all fluffy bunnies and rainbows from here on out.

last.fm

last.fm is great (see my box up in the top right), but I think this screencap says a lot about the geekiness of their target users

Seeing through your tongue

Fascinating article from Wired about hacking senses to create new ones.

brief guide to coding

I’m not sure what the code causing the error in my sidebar did anyway (HTML and CSS I kind of get, but PHP I don’t have a clue with) and am certainly far too lazy to try and fix it. So I just commented it out. Problem not exactly solved, but hidden, which I consider just as good.

Also I added a CC-BY license. So in other words feel free to steal my work, just make sure to say where you stole it from.

Look alive, blogonauts!

(Title stolen from the ever wonderful xkcd)

Well, guess I should make some use of the hosting I bought myself for Christmas, other than holding silly pics for b3ta, so a blog it is! I hope my attention span for this is longer than for my previous blogging attempt, which I won’t link to out of shame

Anyway it seems I picked an ideal time to start. Planet Wikimedia has just been launched to bring together Wikimedia-related blog posts, and I get the feeling I’ll be making a few of them thanks to my full blown wikiholism.

More stuff to come, and over Easter I hope to build up the main website. I also have a couple of big things planned on Wikipedia. For now though I need to get back to the joyous world of Physics, and finish (well start to be honest) my HoC report.
